I had never heard these two words used together until this season of “coronavirusis”. Coronavirusis is my word for all manner of abnormalities in the human social and economic system caused by corona virus pandemic.
A lot of things have happened simultaneously and concurrently in the past weeks. Corona virus is here and scientists are working day and night to figure it out and develop vaccines for it. I have no doubts it will be contained before long.
The stock market had the freest fall in a long time and and oil price has gone down too so people risk loosing jobs, loosing homes and loosing whatever could be lost including life. The panic that comes with the pandemic and all the issues are understandable. What we are doing about all these issues is called to question. Panic buying doesn’t solve problems.
Panic buying is not the solution. We are just being selfish, self centered and gullible. How could you be happy that you have a house full of toilet papers and your neighbor has none or you have a house full of food and your neighbor has no food ? Have we lost a sense of our common humanity or what? The people who are most at risk of the disease: the elderly and the children are the ones that can’t find what they need because those with low risk have all of it loaded up in storage.
I understand we may not be able to buy some of the things we used to buy very readily for sometime after this but we can figure something out. There is always an alternative. Panic buying will probably create more problems than it solves. You hurry up, buy all you can and then what? If this crisis lingers what would happen? If it doesn’t linger then what? Let us hope it doesn’t linger and let us pray solutions come sooner than we thought. When problems like these confront us, ideas come and solutions come. It may take a little while but someone will figure it out.
The lesson I take from this coronavirusis is that people are more afraid of virus than they are afraid of God. I do not believe coronavirus is from God like someone had alluded but God uses every situation to point us to the source of all we are and all we have. This is important because our society had carried on for so long without regards to God and his word. We thought we have things figured out so we have no need for God. The more we continue to carry on like that the more we hit rock bottom like we are fixing to unless God intervenes.
So instead of panic buying, I suggest we pray for God’s intervention. American is a country that acknowledges God and the last time I checked, America is a country that trusts in God. “In God we trust” is not just a fanciful slogan, it is a statement of faith. We cannot trust in God and not get help from Him in times of need. We just have to draw near in faith and ask Him in prayer to ‘heal our land’. Remember the story of Egypt and Goshen?
Observe all the hygienic practices, maintain social distancing, be safe and safety conscious but stop this panic buying. You will not need some of the things you bought for a very long time and I hope they don’t expire in your hands. Love and peace
